Woman found alive and well after going missing for over 60 years

A woman who disappeared for more than 60 years has finally been found safe and well. What's interesting, however, is she didn't even want to be found in the first place.

CNN International reported that Audrey Jean Backeberg from Wisconsin was last seen walking from a bus stop before going missing when she was 20 years old on July 7, 1962.

For several years, authorities made it a point to "pursue numerous leads" and make various efforts to find her, but to no avail. The search was eventually put on pause and remained unsolved.

It was only earlier this year when police decided to try to find her again and hired a detective named Isaac Hanson "for a fresh set of eyes" on the case. He interviewed witnesses again and reviewed different records.

Hanson later discovered an out-of-state address, which he decided to visit.

Shortly after, he successfully got in a minutes-long phone call with Backerberg, who, as Hanson said, "had her reasons for leaving."

"I think she just was removed, and you know, moved on from things and kind of did her own thing and led her life," he said in an interview with CNN affiliate WISN.

Hanson refused to disclose further details on their talk as he promised to keep it private.

He, however, noted that Backerberg "sounded happy, confident in her decision, no regrets."

According to CNN International, police determined that there was no foul play or any criminal activity involved in her case, adding that her disappearance "was her own choice."
