Experience the magic of ballet and enrich your knowledge of our country's history with Ballet Philippines' Limang Daan.

Ballet Philippines, the first resident company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the "country's leading professional classical and contemporary dance institution," is set to showcase a story delving into 500 years of Filipino women's resilience through Limang Daan.

Set to run on March 8-10 as part of International Women's Day, Limang Daan is a full-length original ballet that follows a series of cross-generational heroines who mirror one another through their experiences of pain, suffering, and transcendence.

"It's about the struggles, joys, and hopes of Filipinas then and now. It is about how we have transcended the unforgiving patriarchy to become the Filipinas we are today," said Ballet Philippines President Kathleen Liechtenstein in a statement.

She continued, "It is a very exciting ballet that remains timely, relevant, and very relatable. It is everyone's story."

The dance film is also part of the Ballet Philippine 54th season closing.

The Production

The full-length ballet, featuring a libretto by renowned writer Moira Lang—known for writing acclaimed films such as Norte, The End of History (2013), and Anak (2000)—intends to initiate an engaging conversation on the challenges and hardships that Filipina women have faced throughout the rich and intricate history of our country.

The production will be directed and choreographed by Ballet Philippines Artistic Director Mikhail "Misha" Martynyuk. At the same time, the costumes for the show have been entrusted to the acclaimed fashion designer JC Buendia.

"You will see four fragments of time affecting different epochs of the country where the main female characters have left their mark," Martynyuk said in a press release, "Limang Daan will present Filipino culture in a diversity of dance styles. It will also feature complex choreography, music, light, and costume design coordination."

Regarding musical scoring, Erwin Romulo and Malek Lopez will be at hand. They are known as "two of the most notable composers" working in the country's film industry today following their musical scores for Erik Matti's On the Job series and hit action thriller Buy Bust starring Anne Curtis.

The Characters

The dance film will follow the country's different eras of female heroines.

This includes the story of a Filipina nurse in New York named Ana; a non-binary babaylan living in Pre-Colonial Philippines called Amihan; the three Cordilleran women—Petra, Edena, and Leticia who "defy guns, goons, and gold to protect the motherland from despots deigning to dictate their future;" Maria Clara who leaped from the pages of Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere to embody a repressed nun and Gawani, an Igorot woman recruited to be part of the "human zoo" of the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904.
