Classes set to open on June 8, end on April 8, according to DepEd

The Department of Education has now released its new school calendar schedule for School Year 2026–2027, with classes set to begin in June and end in April next year.

The three-term school calendar was finalized as Education Secretary Sonny Angara signed DepEd Order No. 009, Series 2026 on April 16. Under the guidelines, the school year will consist of 201 class days, from the first day of Term 1 on Monday, June 8, 2026 to the last day of Term 3 on Thursday, April 8, 2027.

"Adjustments to the school calendar due to unforeseen circumstances may be made through subsequent issuances. For succeeding school years, DepEd shall issue a Memorandum before the start of every school year, specifying the detailed schedule of school activities as well as celebrations and observances," the order read.

According to the agency, the new school calendar provides an "organized structure that protects instructional time while supporting enriched teaching-learning experiences."

"Longer and more coherent academic terms allow deeper mastery of competencies and more deliberate pacing of lessons," the order read.

Aside from this, the three-term structure also reduces the frequency of transitions, rationalizes school activities, and minimizes ancillary and nonteaching-related tasks. This then promotes "high-quality instruction, more manageable teaching workloads, and improved and more equitable learning outcomes."

"It allows deeper learner engagement and mastery of competencies through longer instructional blocks. It also enhances remediation and enrichment efforts and promotes sustainable teaching-learning conditions," it added.

The calendar will include three terms consisting of the Opening Block, Instructional Block, and End-of-Term Block.

The first block will be focused on beginning-of-school-year activities such as orientation sessions for learners and parents, conduct of initial mandatory health assessments and learner screening, among others.

The Instructional Block will be devoted to teaching and learning activities, which inclides remediation sessions.

The last block will be for computation of grades, co-curricular and extracurricular activities, and more.

Private schools, as well as Philippine Schools Overseas, and state or local universities and colleges, may adopt the new calendar as long as they abide by the required number of class days and the opening of the school year.
