The Piggatan Bridge in Alcala, Cagayan collapsed along with ten-wheeler trucks, the Cagayan Provincial Information office reported.

The PIO said that the accident took place on Oct. 6 afternoon, rendering the bridge impassable to any kind of cars.

In a statement, the Department of Public Works and Highways said Sec. Vince Dizon dispatched a team to assess the damage.

"Preliminary findings reveal that three loaded trucks, each with an estimated weight of 50 tons, were on the bridge at the time—far exceeding its 18-ton capacity, which seems to have caused the structure to collapse," the agency said.

Meanwhile, Cagayan Governor Edgar Aglipay said that there were four trucks on the bridge. "Because at this point in time, sa Cagayan, harvest season," he explained.

For her part, Alcala Mayor Tin Antonio said that the lifespan of the bridge must also be taken into account.

"This bridge is 45 years old. Baka mas maganda sa polisiya ng DPWH na 'wag na antayin na hanggang sa pinaka-lifespan niya bago palitan," she stated.

Antonio added that the Piggatan Bridge may need upgrading as it's along the Maharlika Highway, the "main artery" of Cagayan province.

"Walang ibang madadaan ang mga vehicles kung hindi ito lamang. Hindi po naayon na 18 tons lang na capacity ng bridge ang ilagay along the national highway."

One person was taken to the hospital after the collapse, according to Aglipay.

Alcala also advised light vehicles to take the Piggatan circumferential road. On the other hand, heavy vehicles must take the Baybayog, Alcala - San Jose, Baggao - Capissayan and Dummun, Gattaran Road.
