DOLE releases guidelines on proper payment of wages for November holidays

The Department of Labor and Employment has issued a reminder to employers and workers regarding the proper payment of wages during holidays in November.

In an advisory, the labor department released pay rules for the special non-working days on Nov. 1 and 2, and the regular holiday on Nov. 30 next month.

According to the agency, the “no work, no pay” principle generally applies to employees who do not report for work on these days, unless a company policy or practice provides otherwise.

Employees who work during the first eight hours are entitled to 130% of their basic wage for the day. Those who render overtime should receive an additional 30% of their hourly rate on the holiday.

If a special non-working day falls on an employee's rest day, those who report for work are entitled to 150% of their basic wage for the first eight hours.

For overtime work on a special non-working day that also falls on a rest day, the pay is computed by multiplying the basic hourly rate by 150% and 130%, then multiplying the result by the number of overtime hours.

Those who work beyond eight hours should receive an additional 30% of their hourly rate on the holiday.

If the day falls on your rest day and you report for work, your employer must grant you an additional 30% of the basic wage.
