Baste Duterte slams Marcos over father's arrest: 'You will never be loved'

Published Mar 16, 2025 5:33 pm

Davao City Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte slammed and cussed out President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. for supposedly handing over his father, Rodrigo Duterte, to the International Criminal Court.

The younger Duterte gave a speech at the 88th founding anniversary of Davao City at San Pedro Square on March 16.

"I will take this opportunity to tell Mr. Marcos how I feel about him. Mr. President Marcos, you will never be loved, especially [by] us who are calling out Rody Duterte’s name," Baste said.

Rodrigo is currently under the custody of the ICC, which is based in The Hague, Netherlands, and made his first appearance at the pre-trial hearing on March 14.

"All you have is your government's resources and your term. Beyond that, you are nothing," Baste told Marcos, adding that he "prays" the president will be able to finish his term.

"Ang tatay mo [Marcos Sr.] pinalibing ng tatay ko, pero 'yung tatay ko pinakulong mo. P****** i** ka!" he said in Bisaya.

The elder Duterte allowed the ousted Marcos Sr. to be buried at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani in 2016 despite criticism.

In January 2024, Baste did not mince his words with Marcos, as he told the president to resign if he did not have "love and aspirations" for the country.

Sara in The Hague

Two of Rodrigo's children, Vice President Sara Duterte and Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte, followed their father to The Hague after his arrest.

Sara addressed supporters on March 14, saying that her father asked her to go home.

"So, he said, tell them (his supporters): 'Just relax. There is an end to everything. There is a day of reckoning,'" she relayed.

Sara also took a swipe at her former running mate's administration, saying, "My fear is, do we still have a country by 2028? Because the way that we are going right now, the Philippines keeps on sinking and sinking."

The VP is set to face an impeachment trial before the Senate in July.

The elder Duterte could be the first Asian former head of state to be indicted by the ICC.

Judges would verify his identity and the language in which he would be able to follow the proceedings. He will be informed of the charges against him and of his rights under the ICC Rome Statute.

A confirmation of charges hearing will follow, during which the judges will decide whether the prosecution has presented enough evidence for the case to go to trial.

If the charges are confirmed, it could be months before the case eventually goes on trial, and years before a final judgment is rendered.

Baste is running for vice mayor in the coming 2025 elections. (with reports from Elizabeth Marcelo)
