New COVID-19 cases breach 10k for yet another record-high
The number of new COVID-19 infections in the country hit a new record-high today as it breached the 10,000 mark for the first time since the pandemic.
According to the latest bulletin by the Department of Health, there were 10,016 new COVID-19 cases recorded. This brings the total number of active cases to 115,495.
Of the total cases, 98.2% were mild and asymptomatic.
There were also 78 recoveries and 16 deaths.
Overall, the country has logged a total of 731,894 cases.
With new cases this month continuously hitting new record levels following days of sustained growth, President Rodrigo Duterte has placed the National Capital Region, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal under an enhanced community quarantine, thereby suspending most businesses and transportation.
The government said the surge this month was largely caused by the entry of new more contagious variants and the non-observance of minimum health standards.
