Duterte accepts PDP-Laban’s endorsement to run for VP in 2022 as ‘sacrifice’

President Rodrigo Duterte has accepted the nomination of his political party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino - Lakas ng Bayan to run as vice president in the 2022 national elections.

In a press release, PDP-Laban said Duterte made the decision after he was “presented with popular calls from PDP Laban” party members to continue his administration’s programs.

“President Rodrigo Roa Duterte agreed to make the sacrifice and heed the clamor of the people, and accepted the endorsement of the PDP Laban Party for him to run as Vice President,” the statement read.

Duterte, who has stated many times before that he was tired of his position as chief executive and wants to resign, has mentioned a number of times in the past his plans to run as vice president.

The country’s 1987 Constitution expressly prohibits the president from running for re-election. Though a number of legal scholars beg to disagree, Duterte’s camp maintains that a president running for vice president is not prohibited by law. (Bim Santos)
