The Universidad de Manila is conducting an investigation after a faculty member was called out for allegedly making transphobic remarks against content creator Awra Briguela.

On May 16, Briguela, a trans woman, shared that a professor from the university displayed "inappropriate and deeply disrespectful" behavior toward her by leaving a degrading comment that "no educator should ever say to anyone."

UDM, in a statement on May 18, said it acknowledged the concerns raised on social media.

"At present, the matter is being addressed in coordination with the University Administration and the Gender and Development Office in accordance with existing institutional policies and procedures," it said.

"As an academic institution, the university does not condone behavior or expressions that may be perceived as discriminatory, demeaning, or harmful to any individual. Necessary investigation and interventions are currently being undertaken through the appropriate offices."

It added that it remains committed to "fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all, regardless of gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation."

In another post on May 19, Briguela thanked the Youth Development and Welfare Bureau for offering assistance and UDM's school president for taking the matter seriously.

"This step was never about creating drama or conflict. It was about standing up for myself, my dignity, and for those who still do not have the courage, platform, or voice to defend themselves. I hope this becomes a reminder that discrimination in any form has consequences and that every student deserves respect regardless of gender identity, expression, or appearance," the actress wrote.

Previously, Briguela shared that she received messages from another student of the professor, who recalled that he had long been making discriminatory remarks against LGBTQ+ individuals.

UDM's LGBTQ+ student organization, Bahaghari, has also condemned the professor's remarks.
