Jeus Yape aces virtual taekwondo match to earn PH its 4th Asiad gold
Jeus Gabriel Derick Yape has given the Philippines its fourth gold medal in the 20th Asian Games after dominating Vietnam's Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang in mixed individual virtual taekwondo.
Just a day after winning bronze in the men's individual poomsae, Yape on Friday, Oct. 2 achieved a 2-0 sweep against Chau at Toyohashi Gymnasium. He started strong and drained Chau's entire health bar in the first round, securing a 500-0 victory in remaining HP.
The Filipino taekwondo gin unleashed a total of 12 kicks, one head kick, and four blocks. His Vietnamese opponent made four kicks, two head kicks, and one block.
In round two, Yape connected on four head kicks, nine total kicks, and one block, while Chau got through with one head kick, three total kicks, and two blocks.
The final tally of total kicks was at 21-7; head kicks at 5-3; and blocks 5-3, all in favor of Yape. He also earned a 1,120-0 in total remaining HP on the virtual mat.
With Yape's gold, the Philippines now has 24 medals, four of which are gold. Carlos Yulo won two golds in artistic gymnastics for men's floor exercise and men's vault, while Ernest Obiena won gold in men's pole vault.
Filipino athletes have also earned six silver medals and and 14 bronze, including Alex Eala's bronze medal on Oct. 1.
Several other athletes are currently still in the running for medals.
