As Typhoon Ulysses pummeled through Luzon, 56% of Meralco customers were rendered powerless since midnight.

The typhoon’s strong winds toppled electric posts, causing brownouts in 3,803,810  households.

As of 10 a.m., 2.95 million (38%) of Meralco’s customers are still without power. These are mostly from Bulacan, Cavite, Rizal, Laguna, Quezon Province, Caloocan, Quezon City, Marikina, Muntinlupa and Makati.

In a statement, Meralco said damage assessment is underway, and it is working to restore power in affected areas as soon as possible, particularly in areas where there are no impeding hazards such as flooding.

“However, reports of flooding, particularly in Pasig, Marikina, Cainta areas may hamper our efforts at the moment. We may be de-energizing deliberately circuits serving these flooded areas to ensure the safety of the public,” the utility firm added.

In an interview over Super Radyo DZBB, Meralco spokesman Joe Zaldarriaga said they are uncertain as to how long it will take the company to restore power in these areas.
