A Filipino teenager passed away after falling from a bridge on an island off Hong Kong. He was 17.

"The Consulate General of the Philippines in Hong Kong has received a police notification on the death of a 17-year-old male who fell from Chau Tsai Bridge in Peng Chau last Friday evening," the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong said in a statement released on Monday, June 29.

The diplomatic office said that upon his body being found, the victim was airlifted by the Hong Kong Government Flying Service to Pamela Youde Nethersole Hospital, where he was "declared dead shortly thereafter."

According to the statement, Hong Kong Police saw "no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death at this point in time."

The South China Morning Post reported that the victim, who held a Hong Kong identity card, was with two friends, sitting on the railings of Chau Tsai Bridge on Peng Chau, an outlying island. Around 7:18 p.m., the victim apparently stood on the railings and took a few steps.

He lost his balance and fell into the sea. According to the SCMP source, the victim's friends initially saw him trying to swim back to shore, but then lost sight of him and immediately called the police.

The consulate general assured close friends of the deceased's family of its willingness "to assist the family with the handling of the remains."
