Seven individuals were injured on Friday morning, April 3, following the collapse of a ceiling section at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1.

According to the New NAIA Infra Corporation, the private operator now managing the airport, the incident took place at approximately 10:43 am within the terminal’s arrival extension area.

The Philippine National Police’s Aviation Security Group responded immediately to the scene, cordoning off the area while medical teams provided assistance to the injured persons.

In response to the accident, the Department of Transportation has ordered the Manila International Airport Authority to work closely with the NNIC to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation. Transportation Secretary Banoy Lopez also said that they must submit a detailed report explaining the cause of the incident.

"This follows the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. to always prioritize the safety and welfare of both the passengers and employees at the airport," it said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the NNIC said its engineering team has completed an initial inspection of the affected area and confirmed that the terminal remains safe for continued use.

It added that investigations are ongoing and it is "working closely with the relevant authorities."

"NNIC continues to provide all necessary assistance to those involved. The safety and well-being of passengers, airport workers, and visitors remain its top priority," it noted.
