City of Manila proposes declaration of August 4 as 'Carlos Yulo Day'
The Manila city government wants to declare August 4 as Carlos Yulo Day.
Manila mayor Honey Lacuna talked about the proposal in an interview with DWPM Radyo 630, adding that the local government aims to have it approved on Aug. 15.
Aug. 4 was the date chosen as this was the date Yulo won his first gold medal for the men's gymnastics floor exercise. The following day, he bagged his second gold at the vault final.
Once approved, the date will be a working holiday in the city of Manila.
Carlos Yulo is scheduled to receive a P2 Million incentive from the local government on August 19. The resolution was also targeted to be presented and awarded at the same ceremony.
Manila LGU also awarded P500,000 to Tondo-born EJ Obiena.
Lacuna said in a separate statement that the achievements of both Yulo and Obiena “may spur massive investments in the sports sector because our athletes need higher allowances while they train, better equipment, and more accessible training facilities not just here in the National Capital Region, but in strategic locations nationwide."
Previously, the Manila mayor led the distribution of cash incentives to the victors of the Batang Pinoy and the Philippine National Games that were held in Cebu City. A Total 67 young athletes received their cash rewards for representing Manila in the previous tournaments.
Among the awardees are Yulo’s younger siblings, Karl Jahrel Eldrew and Eliza Andriel Yulo who won five and two gold medals, respectively.
