DOT, Intramuros honor OFWs with free heritage access and guided tours

In recognition of the invaluable contributions and sacrifices of Overseas Filipino Workers, the Department of Tourism, together with its attached agency, the Intramuros Administration, is opening the gates of the historic Walled City for a week-long celebration dedicated to the country’s modern-day heroes.

From May 25 to 31, OFWs and returning migrant workers may enjoy free entry to two of Intramuros’ premier heritage attractions, Fort Santiago and Centro de Turismo Intramuros. This is part of a special initiative aimed at providing Filipino workers abroad with a meaningful and memorable homecoming experience.

The week-long offering also includes free guided heritage tours, allowing OFWs and their families or companions to reconnect with Philippine history, culture, and identity through immersive storytelling and exploration within the historic district.

“We want to acknowledge the immense hard work our OFWs perform every single day across the globe. Our goal is to express our gratitude by giving them the time to reconnect with their families and our culture,” Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay said in a statement.

“We want to evoke the nostalgia of the days when families routinely took the weekend to walk around Luneta Park, bringing back those cherished memories and offering a relaxed, meaningful space to bond right next door in the historic heart of Manila,” shared Angara-Mathay.

The tourism chief added that by opening Intramuros’ historic landmarks free of charge, the initiative seeks not only to honor OFWs for their sacrifices, but also to encourage family bonding and foster a deeper appreciation for Philippine culture and heritage among returning Filipinos and their loved ones.

Interested visitors may present their valid Overseas Employment Certificate and membership card issued by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration. Each eligible OFW may bring up to four companions.
