Man kidnaps his own grandchild for a P4 million ransom to settle his debts
A man kidnapped his own grandchild for ransom in order to pay off his gambling debts.
According to the South China Morning Post, the Chinese grandfather surnamed Yuan fetched his 4-year-old granddaughter from school and told the latter’s mom that she won’t see her child again "unless you give me 500,000 yuan (P4 million) in three days.”
Yuan even made a death threat against his own daughter, which prompted her to call the cops for help.
The SCMP reported that the Chinese man blamed his daughter for his act when he was questioned by authorities. “I’m 65 years old and my daughter is suing me. She never wants me to get better. She just wants me dead,” he said as he emphasized that what they were dealing with was a “family” and not a “legal” concern.
Yuan even called his daughter “ungrateful” after her move to seek help from the police.
The grandfather has been jailed for extortion.
The man’s actions drew the ire of netizens, according to SCMP. “How useless is a father like that?” an internet user said.
“Extortion and violence are crimes and definitely not a ‘family’ matter,” said another.
