Hong Kong woman dies during diving training in Cebu
A woman from Hong Kong died while training for a 100-meter dive in the Philippines.
Citing local media, South China Morning Post reported on Friday, April 4 that the woman surnamed Fong was in the middle of a demanding technical dive in Cebu with her coach from Hong Kong when she passed away. She was in her fifties.
According to SCMP, the Immigration Department reached out to Fong's family to provide help and assistance during this difficult time.
The department also said that they got in touch with Chinese foreign ministry’s office in Hong Kong and the Chinese consulate in Cebu "immediately" following the tragic incident.
Her body remained in Cebu, per the media outlet.
Technical diving "involves diving to greater depths, exploring underwater caves, shipwrecks, or other challenging environments, and often requires advanced training, equipment, and planning," according to DiveSoft, a company that offers diving equipment. It "opens the door to deeper underwater exploration but comes with higher risks and demands a higher level of expertise."
Per the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, one is required to get through 40-meter and 60-meter technical diving courses before they qualify for a 100-meter course.
