The number coding scheme is set to be reinstated in Metro Manila on Dec. 1 according to Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chair Benhur Abalos.

Abalos said that the scheme, which will only cover private vehicles, is aimed to help reduce the holiday traffic.

“A lot will be rushing to shop. I'm very sure it (number coding) will really come in handy. Habang mas lumalapit sa Pasko, mas lalong namimili. Mas dumadami tao,” Abalos said today in a briefing.

Abalos said public utility vehicles and transport network vehicle services, motorcycles, garbage and fuel trucks, and vehicles transporting essential and perishable goods are all exempted.

Abalos said on Nov. 29, Metropolitan that the Metro Manila Council has signed a resolution to reinstate the number coding scheme.

The scheme will be implemented on weekday rush hours, Monday to Friday, 5pm to 8 pm. The Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program was suspended in 2020 due to the lockdown restrictions brought by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
