Presumptive Vice President-elect Sara Duterte will be the next Department of Education secretary.

"I am already authorized to announce the first nominee that we will be giving to the Commission on Appointments when the time comes, should I be proclaimed and that is that our incoming vice president has agreed to take the brief of Department of Education," Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the country's presumptive president-elect, said in a press conference at his Mandaluyong headquarters.

"So si Inday Sara, tinanong ko sa kanya kung kaya niya yung trabaho dahil mahirap ang trabaho ng secretary of education, pero nag-agree naman siya. Palagay ko kasama na dyan dahil she is a mother and she wants to make sure that her children that her children are well-trained and well-educated, that is the best motivation that we can hope for."

As department chief, Duterte will be responsible for the country’s primary and secondary school system along with addressing the challenges brought on by the pandemic to the country's education system.

In the past, Duterte has proposed mandatory military service for Filipinos once they turn 18.

"It should be that all our 18 years old, when you reach 18 years old, you will be given a subsidy you will be asked to serve our country in our Armed Forces of the Philippines,” Duterte-Carpio said in January of 2022.

The announcement comes after Marcos Jr. claimed victory after the partial and unofficial election polls of Comelec show the former senator leading with 31 million votes, which is over double the votes of his nearest rival, Vice President Leni Robredo.
