Alex Eala moves on to National Bank Open Round of 16 after beating Caty McNally

Alex Eala advanced to the next round of the National Bank Open after beating American Caty McNally in the Round of 32.

The match got off to a shaky start for the Filipina tennis star, who fell behind early as McNally dictated the opening exchanges. Eala, however, quickly found her footing and turned the momentum around, storming back to take the first set, 6-3.

The second set remained a tight battle, with Eala and McNally repeatedly trading points and keeping the score level. Eala called for a medical timeout over a concern with her foot while leading 3-2. McNally fought back to take the second set, 7-5, sending the match to a deciding third set.

Eala came out strong in the third set, taking an early 3-1 lead. The deciding set remained a close fight, but Eala held on to take it 6-4 and secure the win.

She now advances to the Round of 16 at the National Bank Open.

In her post-match interview, Eala sang praises for her opponent, thanking McNally for a tough match and for being a great sport.

“I am okay. I think I survived… It was so tough. I want to thank Caty for a great match and for being a great sport. It’s one of those matches that really could’ve gone either way. I think it really came down to the details and a little bit of luck. So, give her flowers, guys. It was a really great match," she said.

Eala also reflected on the emotional past two weeks and the support she has received from the crowd.

“These past two weeks have been incredible for me. Just so many extreme emotions, and I’m doing my best to power through and be professional, do what I know how to do. Playing in front of you guys is amazing," said Eala, who is currently ranked No. 20.

“The motivation to come here and play another match…everything just became so much more emotional, guys," she added.
