A vape caused an emergency on a plane bound for Melbourne last weekend.

According to ABC News, flight VA328 operated by Virgin Australia was forced to make an emergency landing at Melbourne Airport after a vape ignited a fire in the aircraft.

A spokesperson for the airline said the vape was activated in the cabin mid-air, prompting the pilots to make a call for assistance.

The plane was able to land safely at the terminal and was met by aviation fire and rescue.

All passengers and crew got off the aircraft with no injuries, while the fire crew took the vape device.

"The safety of our guests and crew is our highest priority, and we thank our crew for their swift response in containing the device," Virgin Australia's representative said.

Vapes and e-cigarettes must only be in carry-on baggage and can't be turned on when carried on board, as stated on Virgin Australia's website.
