Nashville airport to be renamed after Dolly Parton

The main airport in Nashville, Tennessee, the home of country music, is to be renamed after one of its brightest stars, the late Dolly Parton who died last month.

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority voted 6-0 on Friday to honor the country music legend by changing the name of Nashville International Airport.

"While a final name has not yet been determined, we are working closely with the appropriate parties to thoughtfully determine how Dolly Parton's name and legacy will be incorporated," the MNAA said in a statement.

It added that they will share the next steps and implementation "in the coming months."

"We are grateful for the tremendous support and enthusiasm from our community and Dolly’s fans around the world. We look forward to sharing additional details as plans are finalized," the statement ended.

Parton died at the age of 80 on August 25 after a brief battle with cancer.

In May, she had announced the cancellation of a series of Las Vegas concerts, citing ongoing health concerns. In videos posted to her social media accounts she said that while treatment for an unspecified illness was going well, she was not ready to be performing on stage.

Parton was prolific in a career spanning six decades during which she penned some 3,000 tunes, including the iconic ballad I Will Always Love You, which became an international smash for Whitney Houston.

Releasing 49 studio albums and more than 100 compilation and collaboration albums, she earned the title of "queen of country music."
