Court rules man can keep P2.4 million from ex who cheated on him
A court ruled that a man can keep the P2.4 million he got from his ex-girlfriend when she tried to save their relationship after discovering she was cheating on him with his nephew.
South China Morning Post reported that the man, surnamed Li, and the woman, identified as Xu, from Shanghai stated dating in 2018.
Li ended his romance with Xu when he found out that she was having an affair with his nephew. Xu, however, was not ready to call it quits just yet, so she acknowledged her mistake and apologized to him for it in a letter.
"I have deeply reflected on my mistakes. Yes, I’ve cheated on you multiple times, causing you immense pain," it read. "I am sincerely remorseful. I will correct my mistakes and compensate you with my sincerity."
Xu then sent 300,000 yuan (P2.4 million) to Li's bank account as a way of saying sorry for what she did.
Li decided to continue their relationship. He, however, discovered that Xu was still with his nephew a few years later.
He broke up with Xu, who then asked him to give back the money she gave him.
Noting that Xu cheated on him several times and how it caused emotional distress, Li denied her request and said he saw the money as compensation for what Xu did to him while they were still together.
Xu decided to take the matter to a court in Shanghai, which recently ruled in favor of Li. It said Li didn't have to return the money as Xu gave it to him "voluntarily."
