Man shot in Antipolo road-rage incident says he just tried to stop fistfight between SUV driver, motorcycle riders
A man who got shot during the viral road-rage incident along Marcos Highway in Antipolo said his family was just trying to stop the fistfight between an SUV driver and two motorcycle riders.
In an appearance on GMA Network's Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho's April 6 episode, Davis Menor said he, his wife Marian Lomida, and their three children were on their way home via their e-tricycle when they saw the motorists having a brawl.
"Parehas lang kami ng way na binabaybay," Menor said while lying on the hospital bed. "Nagtatalo sila, nagsasagutan. Pinarada ko 'yung tricycle ko."
Menor said he observed that the motorists had a verbal exchange before throwing punches at each other.
"Napagtulungan na 'yung driver ng Fortuner," he said.
When the motorists moved to the corner, Davis said he tried to break up the fight.
"Inawat ko 'yung tatay ata nung isa," he said.
Lomida, meanwhile, said he told her husband to go home, but he insisted on staying there to supposedly observe.
"Sabi niya, 'Wait lang, titingnan ko lang,'" she said. "Akala ko naman titingin lang, aawat na talaga siya."
Menor said he was successful in stopping the fight, but one of the motorcycle riders got mad at him and pointed a finger at him. He noted that he couldn't understand what the rider was saying because of the helmet.
After confronting him, Menor said the rider approached the SUV again to throw another punch. That's when the SUV driver, Menor said, pulled out a gun.
"Bumalik siya sa rider ng Fortuner, susuntukin na naman niya," he said. "Tapos 'yung rider ng Fortuner, naglabas na ng baril, kinasa, sabay pinutok. Kaya ako 'yung unang tinamaan."
Menor claimed that the SUV rider was originally aiming for the motorcycle rider but the former's position affected the shot's angle.
"Nakayuko kasi 'yung [SUV] rider, kaya sa akin tumama," he said. "Pero ang babarilin talaga niya, 'yung [motorcycle] rider na kaaway niya."
Menor sustained a gunshot wound on his right chest and is recovering in a hospital in Marikina.
Looking back, Menor said he should've listened to his wife instead of trying to intervene.
"Kung may ganyang nagkakagulo, 'wag na lang tayong makialam," he said. "Kung alam ko na may baril 'yun, di ako lalapit doon."
KMJS noted that the SUV driver "Ken," who's detained at the Antipolo City Police Station, refused to give an additional statement on camera.
Ken previously said he didn't wish for the incident to happen.
"Di ko naman ginusto na mangyari 'yun," he said. "Nablangko na talaga ako kasi ang sakit na ng katawan ko sa bugbog nila. Saka ko kinuha ang baril ko."
Viral videos showed a black SUV and motorcycles stopped on the side of the road with the driver and riders engaging in a fistfight.
According to Police Regional Office 4A, the incident happened at approximately 5 p.m. in front of a coffee shop along Marcos Highway.
Ken's actions led to the injuries of four individuals: Peter Guzon Jr., 52; Patrick Guzon, 22; Menor, 29; and Camille Yacat, Ken's partner.
The driver was seen on video carrying his partner back to his SUV and driving away from the scene after the incident.
Police eventually arrested Ken after a 20-minute chase.
Yacat was brought to the hospital following Ken's arrest.
One of the riders was hit with a bullet in the arm and was released, though he struggled to pay the hospital bill.
The other rider, who was shot in the head, underwent treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on March 31.
A gun ban is in place until June 11 throughout the midterm election period, preventing individuals from bearing, carrying, or transporting firearms or other deadly weapons in public spaces, including buildings, streets, parks, private vehicles, or public conveyance.
