Woman falls headfirst between boulders while trying to retrieve phone
A woman was stuck in a crevice between boulders for several hours after she tried to reach for her phone.
A 23-year-old Australian woman was hiking with friends on a secluded private property in Hunter Valley when she accidentally dropped her phone and fell headfirst into a 10-foot gap between two large rocks.
According to reports, her friends tried to help her get out and eventually had to leave her to find a location with a better signal to call emergency services.
When the New South Wales (NSW) Ambulance service arrived, the woman had been "hanging by her feet upside down" for an hour already.
“As she’s crawled into this little hole, she slipped and slid about three meters down a chute and got stuck,” NSW Ambulance Specialist Rescue Paramedic Peter Watts told CNN.
In a social media post, NSW said they had to move several heavy boulders weighing about 500 kg to be "close enough to get her out of the crevice."
Around 4:30 p.m. she was freed from the boulders and was brought to the hospital.
After the woman was rescued the injuries she gained from this experience were minor scratches and bruises. She was unable to retrieve her phone after the rescue.
Watts said it was his first time to encounter a situation like this in his 10 years as a rescue paramedic.
"It was challenging but incredibly rewarding,” he noted.
The lady was safely freed after 7 hours but was not able to retrieve her phone.
