Extreme athlete Andy Lewis dies in BASE jumping accident
Extreme sports athlete and pro slackliner Andy Lewis was one of the two people who died in a BASE jumping accident in Moab, Utah. He was 39 years old.
According to a press release shared by the Grand County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred at Mineral Bottom Canyon, a remote desert area outside of Moab, last June 14. The second victim was described as an approximately 50-year-old male, identified by local media as Danny Joe Kregle.
Both individuals were pronounced dead from their injuries shortly after emergency responders arrived at the scene.
According to Start Skydiving, BASE jumping "is an activity that is similar to skydiving in the sense that you use a parachute to land—except instead of jumping out of an aircraft, the BASE jumper jumps from objects." BASE is an acronym for Building, Antenna, Span, Earth.
Lewis, known as "Sketchy Andy," broke the Guinness World Record for most side surfs on a slackline in one minute in China in 2011.
The record-setting athlete also became known for performing at the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show alongside Madonna in 2012.
Lewis owns BASE Jump Moab, a BASE jumping company in Utah.
