Two cops killed by lightning strike in Oriental Mindoro
A lightning strike killed two police officers on duty in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro.
According to a report by Mimaropa police, the victims, identified as Patrolmen Laudelino Lomio and Ruzzel Jay Fontarum, were found lying on the police camp's parking lot in Barangay Pinagsabangan I on May 14, at around 10:30 p.m.
The officers, both assigned to the Regional Mobile Force Battalion, were parking their motorcycles when they were struck by lightning during heavy rainfall at the camp. Lomio and Fontarum were discovered by a patrolling policeman, who sought help from other officers.
They immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before bringing the victims to the Mindoro Medical Center, but they were declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
“Their tragic loss is a painful reminder of the silent risks our personnel face in service to the nation. On behalf of Police Regional Office Mimaropa, we extend our deepest condolences to their families and loved ones,” PRO-4B Director Brig. Gen. Roger Quesada said in a statement, adding the dedication and courage of Fontarum and Lomio “will never be forgotten.”
Quesada assured that the bereaved families will receive full assistance, benefits, and honors for the police officers.
Following the incident, they released an advisory to the public on how to be safe from lightning, including seeking cover inside a house or car, staying away from open spaces like rice fields, seaside, and roads, as well as from trees, electric posts, and any metal materials.
