Woman gives birth under collapsed building after Venezuela earthquake
Two powerful earthquakes brought devastation to parts of Venezuela, but amid the destruction, a pregnant woman managed to safely deliver her baby while under the rubble of collapsed buildings.
A woman identified as Dr. María Fernanda Teran shared a video on Instagram of how she helped the new mother in the dark just as she was being rescued from a destroyed building in the city of La Guaira.
Teran could be seen kneeling beside the woman as she held the newborn in her arms.
"Bringing a baby into the world while the earth shakes in La Guaira, Venezuela is the biggest challenge of my life," she captioned the post.
According to South American news outlet Marca, both the mother and her child are now in "perfect health."
Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela within about a minute of each other on the morning of June 25 (Philippine time), causing buildings to collapse and damage in Caracas.
The rare back-to-back tremors, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, rank among the strongest earthquakes to hit the country in more than a century.
The death toll reached more than 1,400 on June 27 as foreign rescue teams poured into the country and authorities pressed on with the search for survivors in the hardest-hit coastal areas.
More than 55,000 people are meanwhile listed as unaccounted for on a website promoted by the country's opposition.
