A man decided to hide the body of his dead father for two years, hoping to avoid "expensive" funeral fees.

According to a report by South China Morning Post, 56-year-old Nobuhiko Suzuki from Japan is now under police investigation for what he did.

Per the media outlet, neighbors alerted authorities and asked to check on him when he did not open his Chinese restaurant in Tokyo for one week.

After responding to their call, police arrived at his home and found his parent's dead body in the wardrobe.

SCMP reported that he kept it there since his father's death at 86 in January 2023.

According to Suzuki, he discovered his dad lifeless at their home. He admitted to hiding the latter's body as "the funeral was expensive."

Authorities said he seemed guilty over his actions but at the same time showed relief that his father "was to blame for his death."

Suzuki has been arrested and is facing allegations of stealing his dad's pension.

A 2020 survey by insurance provider SunLife Ltd showed that funerals in Japan cost 3 million yen prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, which is "around three to four times what's spent in the US and Europe."
