LIST: Schools that declared class suspensions on Feb. 25 for EDSA People Power anniversary

Published Feb 18, 2025 1:25 pm Updated Feb 20, 2025 6:41 pm

Several schools in the Philippines are suspending classes on Feb. 25 to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.

The Edsor Consortium, an association of schools in the EDSA-Ortigas area, had earlier announced they would mark the day as a special nonworking holiday and suspend classes, saying they “reaffirm the continuing significance" of Feb. 25.

“Our schools have agreed to celebrate this date as a special non-working holiday despite Malacañang’s exclusion of this historical event,” the Feb. 17 statement read.

“We will continue to keep the spirit of EDSA alive despite active efforts to undermine it," it added.

Here’s a list of schools that have announced class suspensions on Feb. 25:

  • Immaculate Conception Academy
  • Saint Pedro Poveda College
  • Xavier School
  • University of Sto. Tomas
  • De La Salle Philippines schools (All 16 schools nationwide including La Salle Greenhills)
  • General de Jesus College
  • Holy Child Catholic School
  • St. Scholastica's Academy Pampanga
  • Notre Dame of Greater Manila
  • Imus Institute Inc.
  • Adamson University
  • Congregatio Immaculati Cordis Mariae-Philippines Schools Network (Maryhill School of Theology, Saint Louis College College-Cebu, Saint Louis College-San Fernando City, Saint Louis University, Saint Mary’s University, and University of Saint Louis)
  • Far Eastern University-Dr. Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation, FEU Manila, FEU Makati
  • University of the Philippines Diliman and Cebu
  • St. Scholastica's College Manila

The University of the Philippines has declared Feb. 25 as an Alternative Learning Day. "All administrators, faculty, REPS, students, and staff across the UP System are encouraged to participate in meaningful and peaceful activities that honor the spirit of People Power, with appropriate learning and work arrangements in place," it said, noting that the administrative order "reaffirms the university’s commitment to upholding democratic values, human rights, unity, and civil liberties."

On Feb. 20, UP Diliman announced that it would suspend classes. Meanwhile, administrative staff, REPS, and faculty members who want to participate in EDSA People Power commemoration activities may request a "special work arrangement" from their chair, which must be approved by their unit head/dean or director.

Over 50 groups will hold a protest on Feb. 25 at the People Power Monument on EDSA, per the Taumbayan Ayaw sa Magnanakaw at Abusado Network Alliance (Tama Na).

The EDSA People Power was a series of bloodless demonstrations from Feb. 22 to 25, 1986, which toppled the 20-year dictatorship of Ferdinand E. Marcos

Last October 2024, his son and namesake President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., via Proclamation No. 727, issued a list of regular holidays and special non-working days.

This year, the EDSA People Power Revolution anniversary was declared a special working day, falling on a Tuesday.

It marks the second time Malacañang didn't declare the EDSA People Power a holiday.
