CHED postpones implementation of revised GE curriculum to 2028

The Commission on Higher Education's proposed reframed General Education curriculum has been put on hold for Academic Year 2026-2027.

According to a Philippine STAR report, CHED Chairperson Shirley Agrupis announced on Wednesday, May 13, that they will postpone the implementation to a later date in 2028.

“We just had a meeting, an inter-agency meeting composed of Department of Education, Teacher Education Council, Second Congressional Commission on Education, and, of course, CHED really presented the collective manifestations from the different sectors, and we came to a decision that there will be no reframed GE implementation across all programs this school year,” Agrupis said. “The target of this will be in 2028."

Agrupis said the delay would provide CHED with additional time to examine the concerns expressed by various stakeholders.

“This is to give us time, especially the technical panel and the Department of Education, to analyze and study the different manifestations well because we understand where they are coming from, and even in teacher education, there will be no pilot testing of this reframed curriculum,” she said.

Agrupis added that CHED will continue with consultations before implementing the deferred curriculum.

Under the proposed revised curriculum, GE units will be reduced from 36 to 18, with Humanities courses like literature, history, and arts appreciation being incorporated among six GE courses, namely, Professional Communication; Global Trends and Emerging Technologies; Data, Evidence, and Ethics in a Knowledge-Driven Society; Rizal and Philippine Studies; Labor Education; and an Institutional Course.

The move was strongly opposed by academic groups and educators, who warned that it could result in the removal or weakening of Humanities and Social Science disciplines, job cuts, and a decline in critical and holistic learning.

On May 12, Agrupis had a dialogue with the General Education Movement and other stakeholders before making the announcement.
