Coffee and soju are a perfect match, and these recipes will show you why

Published Sep 01, 2022 12:00 pm

Coffee is the ultimate pick-me-up while alcohol is the source of liquid confidence. Combine them together and you’ve got a flavorful explosion that sends your mind into overdrive.

If you think about certain drinks that go well with soju, sweetened milk and beer are the first that come to mind. But did you know that Jinro soju and coffee are a perfect match as well?

Iggy Tan of Everyday Coffee Roasters believes that the bitter aftertaste of caffeine and the refreshing flavor of Jinro soju is the ultimate combo to keep your energy high.

“Soju has been around for some time. As Filipinos are starting on their "brewdol" journey, many are now beginning to acquaint their taste buds with coffee-inspired beverages,” Tan said. “Putting a little Jinro soju adds a subtle hint of alcohol and that cuddle warmth that is perfect in this rainy weather, whether at home or your nightly samgyupsal with friends.”

If you’re still unconvinced, allow us to list down the best coffee and soju combos that Tan recommends.

Cold brew soju

Ingredients: 45-80ml of 18-hour cold brew coffee (preferably medium to dark roast coffees), 45ml of fresh Jinro soju, 10-15ml sweeteners like sugar syrup or agave (optional), 100g ice

Get a chilled glass (8oz) then add ice. Pour the soju, top it with the cold brew, then mix. Add in your preferred sweetener to taste.

“Filipino are really into cold brew drinking. We’ve seen these past years where most of the sellers are selling cold brew bottle concentrates and subscriptions as we love the distinct flavor,” says Tan.

Iced Soju Latte

Ingredients: 2 shots of original Jinro soju, coffee mix, brown sugar, milk, ice cubes

First, prepare half a glass of coffee then add one teaspoon of brown sugar and a quarter glass of milk. Then, add two shots of soju before stirring. Once you’ve combined them together, add ice cubes to your liking. Make sure to gradually add the ingredients, stir, and taste to get the combination you want.

Soju Mocha Frappuccino

Ingredients: 1 espresso shot, 80 grams of dark chocolate, milk, 1 shot of Jinro soju, crushed ice, whipped cream

Start your drink prep by grinding the dark chocolate. Then, use a handheld mixer to combine the ground chocolate, soju, milk, espresso shot, and crushed ice. Make sure to taste the mix if it’s done according to your liking. If not, feel free to add more shots of soju or espresso.

Finish off your drink with a generous dollop of whipped cream.

Strawberry Soju Espresso

Ingredients: 1 shot of strawberry Jinro soju, 2 shots of espresso, half a glass of water

The simplest recipe on the list, simply dilute 2 shots of espresso using half a glass of water and add one shot of strawberry soju.

Soju Black Tea Latte

Ingredients: 2 shots of Jinro soju, coffee mix, black tea, milk, ice cubes, brown sugar

Make sure that your black tea is diluted in a separate glass before making your drink.

Then, combine the tea, one tablespoon of coffee mix, half a glass of milk, soju, and one teaspoon of brown sugar. Keep tasting and stirring before adding ice cubes according to your liking.

Tan said, “While these are my favorite coffee and soju combinations, there are a lot more creative ways to enjoy your soju drink.”

For example, you can mix ice cream and soju to create an alcohol-infused milkshake, or combine soju with Yakult for a needed kick to your probiotic drink. You can also take notes from Koreans by adding a shot of soju to a glass of beer that’s perfect with greasy food on an after-office night out.

If you’re looking for the perfect canvas for your next cocktail, Jinro Chamisul is the perfect mix of refreshing and addicting.

If you've been to the mart recently, you've probably seen local soju brands claiming to be Korean products. Because the bottles are similar in color, consumers sometimes end up buying these replicas  But of course, if you want to experience the authentic taste of soju, we recommend buying only Jinro soju.
