Lost in the magic of Capella Ubud
Having traveled across continents and seen some of the most remarkable places on earth, I thought I understood the language of luxury. But Capella Ubud in Bali speaks with something deeper—something more like imagination made real. It is not simply a hotel. It is a living dream set within the jungle, where design, nature, and storytelling dissolve into a captivating narrative.
Located in the authentic and exotic town of Ubud, Bali, Indonesia, Capella Ubud is breathtaking. It overwhelms in the most graceful way—through detail, atmosphere, and the quiet confidence of its vision.
My rambunctious traveling group, led by my BFFs, fellow storyteller Büm Tenorio, Rita Trinidad, and our ever-reliable Miladay consultant, Mike Mina, made the adventure even more meaningful. As we stepped inside the property, we were enveloped in awe and found ourselves filled with childlike wonder and curiosity. Our eyes feasted on every corner of this paradise as we explored its pathways, bridges, secret little spaces, and whimsical details that brought smiles to our faces.
Capella Ubud, one of the world's best hotels, is simply unique. It is inspired by a 19th-century explorer's camp, where adventure, history, creativity, and comfort blend together seamlessly.

As lavishly decorated tents welcome guests to Capella Ubud, they experience comfort, art, and a simultaneous connection with nature. Every tent tells its own story through carefully curated décor with a distinct personality and atmosphere. The tent assigned to us had a baker's theme, complete with subtle pastry-inspired touches.
The creative genius behind this impressive property is world-renowned designer and architect Bill Bensley. His signature style is evident throughout the camp and its tents. Every pathway, bridge, artifact, furnishing, and decorative detail was intentional and reflects his commitment to storytelling and artistic design. Bill's love for art goes beyond efficiency and aesthetics as he creates a tactile and immersive experience for guests that lingers long after departure.
He established his Bali studio in 1990, reflecting his deep affection for the island and its culture. Today, it operates alongside his Bangkok studio and is staffed by architects, interior designers, artists, and landscape specialists.
At night, as raindrops danced softly on the canvas roof of our tent, they created a soothing symphony, as though singing us to sleep. Surrounded by the music of the jungle, we experienced a profound sense of joy and peace.
Just as striking was the warmth and dedication of general manager Christian Jaquier and his exceptional team. Their hospitality reached a level that felt both genuine and effortless.
But what made it truly special was the shared moments we experienced together. Every sumptuous meal and conversation became a little celebration of friendship, humor, laughter, and gratitude. Capella Ubud provided the setting, but it was the companionship that transformed our stay into something we will cherish for a long time.
Just a short distance from the resort, we explored the lively town of Ubud. Shopping became an adventure in itself as we delighted in authentic Indonesian treasures. There were handcrafted home décor pieces, jewelry, woven baskets, beautiful batik fabrics, casual clothing, and local snacks such as krupuk. Rita, being a chef, hunted for ingredients and spices so she could bring a bit of Bali home. Bum and I enjoyed picking out souvenirs for our loved ones.
A visit to Bali would not feel complete without feasting on authentic Indonesian cuisine, a rich culinary heritage that satisfies even the most discerning palate. During our gastronomic adventure, we sampled local favorites such as gado-gado, a flavor-packed medley of vegetables dressed with peanut sauce. There was also nasi campur, along with many other delicious Indonesian dishes that delighted our palates.
Back at the resort, the heart of the Capella Ubud experience is Api Jiwa, where fire is not merely a cooking method but a language of its own. The name says it all: api means fire, and jiwa means soul. Together, they create a dining experience that feels elemental, intentional, and somehow alive. The dishes arrived like chapters in a carefully crafted story. Every plate struck a delicate balance between smoke and sweetness, heat and restraint, familiarity and surprise. Asian influences intertwined beautifully with local spices and ingredients, which took center stage.

As darkness settled and the romantic chorus of cicadas filled the air, our group of fun-loving travelers exchanged stories of love and laughter. We thanked the good Lord for His many blessings, including our unforgettable experience in Bali.
Capella Ubud is not just a place to spend time—it is a paradise camp where we felt a profound sense of belonging. It is a sanctuary whose ultra-luxurious tents elevate glamping into an art form. It is, without question, the kind of place that redefines what a magical destination can be and quietly transforms a stay into a whimsical story that you carry not only in your imagination but also in your heart.
