From Tokyo to BGC: Ootoya brings Japan’s beloved comfort kitchen

Manila’s dining scene moves fast, always chasing the next trend, the newest concept, the flashiest opening. Then a restaurant arrives that does the opposite. It asks you to slow down, sit properly, and eat a real meal. That restaurant is Ootoya, Japan’s beloved home-style dining institution, which has finally opened its first Philippine branch.

Founded in Tokyo in 1958, Ootoya began as a modest eatery serving everyday Japanese comfort food. Over the decades, it has grown into a global brand with hundreds of branches across Japan and in major cities including New York, Bangkok and Taipei. Despite its international reach, its purpose has remained constant: Ootoya serves washoku, traditional Japanese home cooking that values balance, seasonality, and nourishment. The experience is not theatrical. It is quietly satisfying, the kind of meal that feels like it was cooked in a family kitchen rather than a commercial one.

At the heart of Ootoya’s menu is the teishoku, a carefully composed set meal designed to provide a complete and balanced dining experience. Each set comes with premium Japanese rice, miso soup, homemade pickles, a main dish, and seasonal sides. It is simple food prepared with discipline and care.

The menu emphasizes fish and chicken, offering lighter yet flavorful options. Signature dishes include charcoal-grilled fish cooked using Ootoya’s proprietary system that combines gas heat, ceramic balls, and charcoal to achieve a distinctive aroma and precise doneness. Standouts include Sima Hokke Sumibiyaki, or grilled mackerel with grated radish; Salmon Saikyoyaki, marinated in sweet saikyo miso; and Gindara Saikyozuke Sumibiyaki, featuring black cod marinated in an original miso blend. Hearty choices such as Chicken Kurozu in rich black vinegar sauce, Pork Loin Katsu Tamagotoji simmered with onion and soft egg in a soy-based broth, and the comforting Demiglace Hamburger Steak round out the selection. There is also a Manila-exclusive Ootoya Teishoku that combines pork, karaage, and ebi fry in one generous tray.

Beyond the set meals, the restaurant offers Wagyu steaks, sukiyaki, sushi, sashimi, tempura, and noodles. Many ingredients and seasonings are imported directly from Japan, preserving authenticity in both flavor and preparation.

The restaurant itself mirrors the food. Calm, minimalistic, and inviting, it is designed for families, groups, and even solo diners who want a quiet meal. Two private dining rooms that seat up to 10 guests each make it suitable for intimate gatherings and celebrations. Located on the ground floor of the Grand Hyatt Manila Residences South Tower, it is easily accessible to residents, office workers, and visitors moving through BGC’s busy streets.

Internationally, Ootoya operates more than a hundred stores and expands carefully, prioritizing authenticity. Its entry into the Philippines comes through a partnership with Federal Brent Retail Inc., an affiliate of Federal Land Group known for developing retail and lifestyle spaces. The collaboration combines Ootoya’s culinary heritage with local expertise, positioning the brand for long-term growth in the country.

I attended a media presentation and tasting a few days before the restaurant opened to the public. We were welcomed by Jerry Angchay and Edward Gabrianne Tan, general manager and assistant treasurer of Federal Brent Retail Inc., along with their team. Ootoya general manager Wataru Omika warmly welcomed us in his native Japanese, and chef Homaru Kimura flew in for the launch.

Dish after dish arrived at our table, a generous sampling that allowed us to experience nearly the entire menu, with chef Kimura thoroughly describing and explaining the cooking process of each. I had my personal favorites, though honestly every plate delivered. What struck me most was the quality: The flavors were clean, the cooking precise, the portions satisfying. Equally notable was the pricing, which felt refreshingly reasonable for food of this authenticity and standard. According to Angchay, “This is our first international chain, and we look forward to adding more to our portfolio.” Federal Brent Retail manages a few local chain food outlets.

Dining at Ootoya is defined by authenticity and the quiet confidence that comes from doing things properly. It is honest Japanese home cooking executed with care, where each component on the tray has a purpose, and every bite reflects a meticulous respect for cooking done well.
