Las Caídas: Gateway to nature’s wonders in Laguna
Sometimes, the greatest views are the ones right next to us.
It had been quite some time since I last experienced a beautiful mountain retreat in the Philippines. My rambunctious and daring group of traveling friends began our trek toward Usong Falls, a hidden waterfall located within Las Caídas in Laguna. I imagined a bevy of fairies bathing under the cool waters of this paradise. After trekking through the fertile soil of the mountaintop, we arrived at what felt like a Garden of Eden— verdant and lush.
We recently discovered this resort in Laguna—Las Caídas Wellness Resort, a serene haven in Cavinti, whose name means “waterfalls.” Here, we found peace and restoration in the refreshing breeze. The rustling air swayed the leaves as if whispering a gentle prayer.
Not far from view, a dramatic and romantic waterfall cascaded gracefully into a ravine, its clear, sparkling blue waters splashing into the gorge below. Birds sang and soared across the skies, while flower-filled paths invited quiet wandering. For a fleeting moment, I felt as though I was in heaven—or at least very close to it.
We were served classic Filipino cuisine for our midday meal: perfectly cooked adobong pusit, their unique version of laing, steamed pampano, hot rice, and tinolang manok. For a sweet ending, we had caramel mochi and refreshing cucumber and coconut-lemon juice.
As if the activities at mesmerizing Las Caídas were not enough, we proceeded to the turquoise, emerald waters of Caliraya Lake to witness flocks of seagulls and migratory white birds in their natural habitat. For a moment, I felt as though I were on the set of Alfred Hitchcock’s film The Birds. The sight of these creatures in flight was both ethereal and surreal.
For the faithful, a sojourn to “Ang Kamay ni Hesus,” a towering image of Christ, calls one to pause and pray reverently. A pilgrimage to this sacred ground invites reflection and gratitude for both life’s grand and humble blessings.
Laguna also lures visitors with abaca slippers and handbags from Liliw, the “Tsinelas Capital of the Philippines,” where footwear is crafted from local materials such as abaca and banig, a traditional Filipino handwoven mat. These colorful creations make perfect keepsakes or gifts for loved ones.
Returning to the resort felt even more rewarding.
Las Caídas Wellness Resort offers unique villas, each capturing a seamless blend of comfort and nature. The Serenidad Pool Villa provides a tranquil retreat away from the bustle of the city. The Cascada Pool Villa draws inspiration from Cavinti’s flowing waters, while the Montana Pool Villa, named for its lush greenery, offers privacy and a calm escape.
Owners Romel Diaz and Liezl Diaz envisioned Las Caídas as more than just a destination. Their advocacy is to provide guests a space to unwind from the demands of everyday life, live in harmony with nature, and achieve overall wellness for the body, mind and soul.
The wellness experience made our stay exceptional. We immersed ourselves in a kawa bath, resting our weary bodies and exhausted minds in warm water infused with Epsom salts and fragrant flowers. This was followed by the Tranquila signature massage—a treatment featuring long, flowing strokes reminiscent of Balinese techniques, combined with cupping and the ventosa method using sugarcane. It was a complete retreat for our muscles, restoring balance to both mind and body.
A unique discovery on this trip was the sound healing session. We experienced quartz crystal singing bowls that produced harmonious tones, encouraging deep meditation and relaxation. An angel card reading added a playful touch, bringing laughter among all participants.
“Very private and luxurious villas, both exclusive and comfortable. I’m happy there is a haven like this in Laguna,” shared Frederic Tan Ching, president of the Lumban Tourism Council and Treasurer of the Laguna Tourism Council.
The sweet fragrance of evening filled the air at Las Caídas. Surrounded by dear friends, we sat together on the patio, reminiscing about the magic of our stay. We offered thanks to the Lord for such priceless and meaningful blessings.
Above us, the stars twinkled while bamboo framed the pale waters. We spent the night watching koi fish glide beneath moonlit pools, softly illuminated by capiz lamps glowing among the trees. The gentle sound of rushing water filled the air. For a fleeting moment, I felt one with the universe and whispered: “I am exactly where I am meant to be.”
