A 'Summer I Turned Pretty' movie is in the works
Listen up, The Summer I Turned Pretty fans: The beloved young adult romance is getting a movie!
At the red carpet celebration of the series finale in Paris, Jenny Han—who wrote the novel trilogy and developed it for television—announced the news about the development of the film. Without sharing plot details, she shared that the movie would provide a fitting conclusion.
“There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due,” she said. “I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.”
The Summer I Turned Pretty, which premiered on Prime Video in 2022, is based on a novel trilogy written by Han: The Summer I Turned Pretty, It’s Not Summer Without You, and We’ll Always Have Summer.
The coming-of-age story centers around 16-year-old Belly Conklin who spends her summers at Cousins Beach, where, as a child, she meets brothers Jeremiah and Conrad Fisher. The three grow up together, seeing each other every summer, and developing a deep friendship. Eventually, a love triangle develops, creating the fulcrum of the series.
Outside of the romantic angle, the series touches on the shifting dynamics within families, the enduring power of female friendship, and the difficulty of dealing with loss.
The Summer I Turned Pretty has developed a strong following since its first season premiered. According to Prime Video, Season 3 debuted with a total of 24 million viewers worldwide within a week.
“[It] has struck a chord with audiences everywhere, creating moments of joy, nostalgia, and connection that have made it a global sensation,” Courtenay Valenti, head of film, streaming and theatrical at Amazon MGM Studios, and Vernon Sanders, Global Head of Television, at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said in a statement, as reported by Variety.
In the Philippines, fan allegiances have been established between Team Conrad and Team Jeremiah.
