Prince Harry in talks to make Princess Diana documentary for mother's 30th death anniversary

Prince Harry is in talks to make a documentary about his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, in time for the 30th anniversary of her death, according to The Telegraph.

The media outlet reported that Harry is looking to mark the Aug. 31, 2027 anniversary by honoring his mother’s legacy “in the most meaningful way.” It added that he has approached several of Diana’s friends and relatives, including her brother, Earl Spencer, about taking part in the project.

A source close to Harry told The Telegraph that the Duke has "discussed a number of possible projects to mark the 30th anniversary of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales’s passing.”

“Nothing has been finalized or confirmed, and he is still considering the most meaningful way to honour her legacy during this important anniversary year,” the source added.

This comes after the release of the memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, by Harry's uncle Earl Spencer. The latter reportedly declined to participate in other productions about his sister, saying he did not want to become a “talking head” in projects that might follow a “flawed” agenda.

Spencer said he wanted to tell Diana’s story on his own terms. “I was an eyewitness to history, and where the truth is difficult, I haven’t shied away from it,” he told The Telegraph.

He also explained why he chose to write the memoir as the 30th anniversary approaches. “The 30th anniversary of her death is approaching; I am in my sixties now and I feel the passage of time more sharply than I once did,” Spencer said. “I don’t want to reach the end of my own life having left my sister’s story to be told by people who never knew her.”

Spencer said he was previously approached to participate in other projects about Diana but chose to write his own account instead. “I made the decision to write it a year ago, as I was being approached to take part in other people’s projects about her,” he said. He added that he had declined “endless, repeated” requests to appear in documentaries about Diana because he did not want to follow “an agenda set by some TV producer I will never meet.”

Diana died on Aug. 31, 1997, following a car crash in Paris. She was 36 years old.

Harry was 12 at the time of his mother's passing.
