‘Mandalorian’ fans petition Disney to fire Gina Carano after controversial tweets

Fans of hit show The Mandalorian are not happy with the recent statements of actress Gina Carano. Many are even calling on Disney to axe her from the show after the star made several social media posts spreading conspiracy theories about mask wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic and floating allegations of voter fraud during the 2020 US Presidential elections.

Carano posted two memes saying: “In a world where everyone wears a mask, it’s a privilege to see a soul” and “Democratic government leaders now recommends we all wear blindfolds along with masks so we can’t see what’s really going on.”

Fans were furthered inflamed after Carano tweeted: “We need to clean up the election process so we are not left feeling the way we do today. Put laws in place that protect us against voter fraud. Investigate every state. Film the counting. Flush out the fake votes. Require ID. Make Voter Fraud end in 2020. Fix the system.”

The hashtag #FireGinaCarano was a trending topic since last week and some fans even railroaded a petition asking Disney Plus to replace Carano as Cara Dune – a former Rebel shock trooper who becomes a mercenary and Mandalorian ally – in the streaming service's hit show, The Mandalorian.

Yet at the same time, the hashtag #StandWithGinaCarano also trended on Twitter. This was in response from fans who feel the plea to kick Carano out of the show is an example of censorship, and that "Cancel Culture" has gone way too far.

This is not the first time that Carano landed in hot water because of her controversial tweeting habit. Back in September, the actress posted an image of Nazi soldiers, an act that fans viewed as racist. She also changed her Twitter profile to add "beep/bop/boop" next to her name, in lieu of pronouns. Some were angered by the move, calling it a mockery of trans people.

Disney has yet to comment on the social media backlash but the company has a history of veering away from controversy. Back in 2018, Disney replaced Rachel Butera, the voice of Leia Organa in the animated Star Wars Resistance, after fans disagreed with her mockery of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings.
