The music industry is not considered an essential business by the government. But music was utterly essential in helping many of us see through 2020.
What music helped our nation's leaders and icons survive this challenging year? Here is a brief sampling.
According to the Presidential Communications Operations Office, President Rodrigo Duterte has an iPod loaded with his favorite classical songs. Duterte does not use Spotify, but here is a sample playlist we made based on the songs that the chief executive usually listens to, which, it turns out, are filled with old-time classics. All are mostly foreign hits except for one song that the PCOO made sure should be on the list—Ikaw.
Vice President Leni Robredo, meanwhile, shared screenshots of her Spotify Wrapped 2020. You could find the songs she listened to in the screenshots below.
She also shared the screenshot of her top podcast for 2020 which was "A Rosary Companion," a show she binged for 21 episodes on one particular day.
Secretary Harry Roque also shared with us his go-to playlist for the year, which has a fair number of contemporary OPM hits.
Tourism Secretary Berna Puyat shared her top songs for the year below, headlined by a classic '90s hit.
The top 10 songs of GMA-7 newscaster Mike Enriquez, meanwhile, are filled with timeless classics.
ABS-CBN host, weatherman, and triathlete Kim Atienza's Spotify 2020 Wrapped showed his deeply held religious faith.

The Spotify 2020 Wrapped results of Monty Macalino, guitarist and vocalist of long-running OPM band Mayonnaise and now a self-confessed Blink, showed in no uncertain terms his newfound passion for K-pop.
