Brillante Mendoza's 'Mindanao' is Philippines' official Oscars entry

Brillante Mendoza’s “Mindanao” has been selected as the Philippines’ entry to the 93rd Oscars International Feature Film category.

The Film Academy of the Philippines announced the news in a Facebook post.

The film features a Muslim mother played by Judy Ann Santos, who is caring for her cancer-stricken daughter while she awaits her husband, played by Allen Dizon, to come home from deployment as a combat medic.

The film won best picture in the recent Metro Manila Film Festival.

Santos was also adjudged as best actress in the 41st Cairo International Film Festival for her performance in the film. Mindanao also bagged the prize for best artistic contribution in the said festival.

The 93rd Oscars ceremony, also known as the Academy Awards, is slated on April 25, 2021.
