Cannes short film selection 'Left Behind, Still Standing' features a Pinoy editor
The film editor behind the short Left Behind, Still Standing—set to debut at the Festival de Cannes in the La Cinef section—is a Filipino.
Rafael Luis Fernando worked on the short, which was produced at the UK's National and Film Television School, alongside director Vida Skerk.
The movie, along with the animated short Pickled, was among the 19 entries selected out of 2,750 submissions from film schools across the globe.
The work marks Fernando's first appearance in Cannes.
Left Behind, Still Standing tackles issues of migration and survival through the story of Morana, an immigrant laborer faced with an uncanny event at her workplace.
Fernando is a Manila-born, London-based editor and filmmaker, and a graduate of the UK’s National Film and Television School. Working with narrative and documentary genres, his films have screened internationally, including at Cannes, SXSW, and Jackson Wild.
The Cannes Film Festival has screened Filipino works since 1978. Raymond Red won the Short Film Palme d'Or award for Anino in the 2000's iteration of the awards, while Brillante Mendoza won best director for 2009's Kinatay.
In 2025, Agapito by Arvin Belarmino and Kyla Danelle Romero was part of the 78th edition's short film competition.
