The Big Bang Theory’s Johnny Galecki working on new ’90s-themed sitcom
The Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki is reportedly developing a ’90s-themed sitcom for CBS.
According to a report by Deadline, Galecki has teamed up with former Will & Grace executive producer John Quaintance to develop a half-hour multi-cam sitcom titled AOK.
The upcoming project, being developed by Warner Bros. Television for CBS, is about an underdog Internet company in pre-AOL 1991 and follows "a group of young and mostly idealistic entrepreneurs who work together, hang out together, and fall in and out of love with each other, all while trying to change their world, and holding up a mirror to ours."
“This specific period of time is personal to many, including all of us involved so it’s important to make the show feel as authentic as possible,” Galecki said. “We are excited to reimagine the ’90s sitcom through a modern lens as John has created something truly special. We hope to surprise people in a familiar place with characters you will fall in love with.”
Deadline said that Quintance is serving as creator, writer and executive producer on AOK, with Galecki also serving as an executive producer. There's still no announcement of the show's release date or even its cast members. It's also unclear if Galecki is part of the upcoming comedy series' cast.
AOK will be Galecki's next big project following his stint as Leonard Hofstadter in the hit CBS sitcom. The show, which starred Kaley Cuoco (Penny), Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper), Simon Helberg (Howard Wolowitz), Kunal Nayyar (Raj Koothrappali), Mayim Bialik (Amy Farrah Fowler), and Melissa Rauch (Bernadette Rostenkowski), ran from 2006 to 2019 for a total of 12 seasons.
Speaking of ’90s sitcoms, a spinoff of Fox's hit comedy series That ’70s Show is also in the works at Netflix.
The streaming platform previously announced that it has greenlit a 10-episode series order for That ’90s Show, which will see the return of That ’70s Show alums Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp as Red and Kitty Forman.
This time around though, the upcoming series will follow the story of Eric and Donna's daughter Leia, who is visiting her grandparents for the summer. Just like the original series, the show will see Leia (probably named after Princess Leia by Eric) hanging out with a new generation of Point Place kids at her father's basement under the watchful eye of Kitty and the stern glare of Red.
