Everything you need to know about 'House of the Dragon,' the upcoming 'Game of Thrones' prequel

Heads up, Game of Thrones fans! HBO is bringing us back to Westeros after three years, with the upcoming release of the beloved series' prequel, House of the Dragon.

But what can we expect from the Game of Thrones spin-off? Wars? Dragons? Sex? More incest?

On July 21, HBO dropped the first trailer for House of the Dragon, which gives fans a glimpse of the tales the show will tell. Here's what else you need to know about the much-awaited prequel.

What is House of the Dragon about?

The show will be set 200 years before the events of HBO's Game of Thrones series, so don't expect to see characters like Daenerys or Jon Snow returning. It takes us back to a Westeros ruled by the Targaryens with King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) on the throne.

The ruler must choose his successor from his younger brother Daemon (Matt Smith) or his daughter Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy). The Seven Kingdoms have yet to be ruled by a queen, thus others try to challenge Rhaenyra's claim.

Showrunner Miguel Sapochnik also said that Viserys marries Rhaenyra's best friend, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), making her queen. It's pretty messed up because it's basically a "What if your best friend hooks up with your dad?" story. And despite being besties, the trailer shows that Alicent isn't too keen on having Rhaenyra on the throne.

In addition, House of the Dragon will have multi-year jumps, according to showrunner Ryan Condal.

Which characters are in the series?

Aside from the aforementioned characters, House of the Dragon will also see dashing knight Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel), Hand of the King Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), Viserys' cousin Rhaenys (Eve Best), the greatest seafarer Westeros has ever known Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), and Prince Daemon's paramour Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno).

Is it based on a book?

Like Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is based on a 2017 novel by George R.R. Martin titled Fire & Blood.

When is House of the Dragon streaming?

House of the Dragon arrives on HBO Go Philippines on August 22.
