(Maybe) Judge a book by its cover: #Romanceclass community holds online event

Perhaps it's unfair to "judge a book by its cover" as the saying goes. However, where actual books are concerned, judging the content becomes a matter of marketing and no matter what your opinion, the cover, especially the artistry behind the design, is just as important as what's inside.

If you want to learn from the experts, you're in luck. Including a panel discussion on how to create book covers, the romance literature community #RomanceClass is joining the celebration of this year’s Buwan ng Wika with a host of online activities.

The event “Maybe judge a book by its cover” will be streamed live from the community’s YouTube channel this Saturday, August 22 at 7:00 p.m. This online event will be as interactive and lively as any in-person affair, and if you are a publishing professional, aspiring book cover designer and artist, or a curious audience member, you can ask questions on the live chat which the panelists can answer live on the stream.

Author and host, Mina V. Esguerra.

The event will be hosted by Mina V. Esguerra, an author of 25 published books and the founder of the #RomanceClass community. Her book covers feature not only Filipino artists’ work, but also Filipino models.

The panelists are cover designers Miles Tan (Stay a Little Longer, Project Saving Noah), Carla de Guzman (Stealing Luna, You Are Here) and Tania Arpa (So Forward, Songs to Your Beat).

Miles' designs and illustrations can be found on various independently and traditionally published titles, including books released by Anvil Publishing and U.S. publishing house Andrews McMeel. She is also an author in her own right. Her stories have appeared in anthologies, and Finding X is her contemporary romance novel.

Carla de Guzman.

Carla is an artist and author. She likes designing her own book covers and enjoys adding illustration and hand-lettered elements to her work. Her designs and hand-lettering art has graced the covers of other authors’ books, such as the contemporary romance book No Two Ways and the poetry collection You Are Here. Her most recent self-designed title is Alta: A High Society Romance Anthology.

Tania Arpa.

Tania designs mostly contemporary romance book covers, although she has done cover work for non-fiction and young adult fantasy titles as well. Her portfolio includes Jay E. Tria’s Playlist book series and Mina V. Esguerra’s Interim Goddess of Love trilogy.

Maybe Judge A Book By Its Cover is part of #RCReadathon2020: Filipino Creators Edition, a month-long celebration of Buwan ng Wika by the #RomanceClass community. The group believes in championing more Filipino-created work and encouraging other Pinoy artists and readers to do the same.
