Neil Druckmann says 'don't bet' on third 'Last of Us' game
Sad news, gamers. It looks like The Last of Us: Part III isn't happening.
The video game's creator Neil Druckmann discussed the title's future in an interview with entertainment outlet Variety.
"I guess the only thing I would say is don't bet on there being more of Last of Us. This could be it," he said.
In a February 2024 documentary, Druckmann said there was "one more chapter" to the Last of Us story, but it appears that this has changed in 2025.
Game aside, fans can expect the HBO adaptation to get more than three seasons.
"It's pretty likely that our story will extend past a season 3," showrunner Craig Mazin told Entertainment Weekly in February. "How far past? I can't say. And that's not to say that there are not other stories that could be told, but this story is the one that Neil and I are planning."
While HBO has yet to renew the show for a third season, Mazin talked to Variety about starting their process all over again.
"I've been feeling scared lately like, 'Oh, yeah, I have to start thinking about season 3," he said. "I remember having this feeling when we were finishing season 1, where I was like, 'How the f**k are we going to top this?' Now of course, I'm like, 'How the f**k are we going to top this?'"
The first season of The Last of Us took inspiration from the 2013 game. The second game, released in 2020, will span multiple seasons.
The first game follows Joel, a smuggler who lost his daughter during an outbreak of a mutated fungus. He gets tasked to escort Ellie, a teenager who's immune to the infection, across a post-apocalyptic United States.
The second game mainly centers around Ellie as she seeks revenge over the death of a loved one.
The Last of Us season 2 stars Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsay, Gabriel Luna, Rutina Wesley, Isabela Merced, Kaitlyn Dever, Young Mazino, Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Wright, Danny RAmirez, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, and Ariela Barer.
