Steven Spielberg reaches EGOT status with Grammy win for John Williams documentary
The elite EGOT club just gained a new member.
At the 2026 Grammy Awards on Feb. 1, Steven Spielberg won his first Grammy under the Best Music Film category for the documentary Music by John Williams. The win made the illustrious film director and producer the latest individual to achieve EGOT status, having now won all four of the major American entertainment awards for television, music, film, and theater: an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
Spielberg's Grammy win was for his work as one of the producers for Music by John Williams, as reported by Variety. The legendary composer and celebrated director/producer have had a decades-long relationship, working together on such award-winning gems as Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, and Jaws.
For his television work, Spielberg has won four Primetime Emmy Awards. He received an Emmy for outstanding animated program for A Pinky and the Brain Christmas in 1995, and three Emmys for outstanding limited or anthology series for the war drama Band of Brothers in 2001, the miniseries Taken in 2003, and the HBO World War II companion series The Pacific in 2010.
As a film director, Spielberg is the third most Oscar-nominated individual for best director with nine nominations, next to Martin Scorsese, who has 10 nominations, and William Wyler, who has 12. Spielberg won the award twice—for the Holocaust-era film Schindler's List in 1993 and the World War II epic Saving Private Ryan.
He holds more Academy Award nominations for best picture in his role as producer. So far, Spielberg has had a record-making 14 nominations, including for the Shakespeare drama Hamnet, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Letters from Iwo Jima (2006), the remake of West Side Story (2021), and Maestro (2023).
Spielberg's Tony win was as one of the producers for the Tony-winning musical A Strange Loop, along with his wife Kate Capshaw and fellow EGOT member Jennifer Hudson. He has been nominated for best musical twice, as well, for Water for Elephants in 2024 and Death Becomes Her (2025).
As Spielberg joins the likes of fellow EGOT winners Elton John, Audrey Hepburn, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Viola Davis, and Whoopie Goldberg, and Jennifer Hudson. There are now 22 EGOT holders since American composer Richard Rodgers first achieved the status in 1962. Six others, including Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli, and James Earl Jones, have also earned EGOT status by being recognized in non-competitive honorary categories, such as lifetime achievement awards.
The 2026 Grammy Awards are being handed out on Monday, Feb. 2. Check out the complete list of winners here.
