Match with memes: A new dating app is testing compatibility through your taste in memes
A match made in Internet heaven.
A so-called “meme-based” dating app catering to the wacky world of internet photos is now under development.
With the Gen Z crowd and digital natives in mind, the app named Schmooze is here to lift the burden of online dating by making people do their favorite online activity: looking at memes and judging them.
The process is simple enough, as you only need to swipe right and swipe left on a certain meme to solidify your information and curate your taste. From there, Schmooze has a “humor algorithm” that integrates machine learning and memes to suggest like-minded people that you could date in the area.
Initially serving as a dating app for university students, Shmooze now has made over 100,000 matches in the U.S.
Shmooze creator Vidya Madhavan met her husband in a similar way. Though they didn’t meet through an app, she mentioned that it was their shared sense of humor that ultimately formed their bond and solidified their friendship and eventual marriage.
“We exchanged, like, 200 emails, all of them fundamentally jokes,” Madhavan shared with Techcrunch on the idea behind the app.
As of writing, Schmooze is only in beta mode and available in select cities in the US. Though with the start-up slowly gaining traction on social media app TikTok, the possibilities are endless.
Are you up to date someone with similar meme tastes?
