Chad Michael Murray is stepping into the shoes of America’s most notorious serial killer in the upcoming film Ted Bundy: American Boogeyman.

The former teen idol best known for his roles in One Tree Hill, Gilmore Girls and more recently Riverdale, stars along with Lin Shaye (Insidious), Holland Roden (MTV's Teen Wolf), Jake Hays and Marietta Melrose in the film by Dark Star Pictures.

The film focuses on the extensive FBI manhunt to find and apprehend Bundy during his spree in the Florida college scene. The film is written and directed by Daniel Farrands, whose previous work includes The Amityville Murders, The Haunting of Sharon Tate, and The Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

A specter roams the highways of a gritty and decadent 1970s America, hunting for his next prey — his name is Ted Bundy (Chad Michael Murray). Tracking him down are the intrepid female detective Kathleen McChesney (Holland Roden), working out of the Seattle Police bureau, and rookie FBI profiler Robert Ressler (Jake Hays), the government agent who coined the term "serial killer." The true story behind the manhunt that brought America’s most fearsome boogeyman to justice.

Earlier this year, following the announcement of Murray's involvement in the film, fans and critics alike voiced their concern for yet another Ted Bundy Film and how Hollywood is glorifying serial killers like Bundy, who murdered about 30 women in the ‘70s and has about seven films and a TV series retelling his crimes.

Aside from Murray, the infamous serial killer has also been portrayed by Zac Efron in the 2019 film Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, Adam Long in the 2018 TV series Ted Bundy: Serial Monster, James Marsters in the 2008 film The Capture of the Green River Killer, Corin Nemec in the 2008 film Bundy: An American Icon, Cary Elwes in the 2004 film The Riverman, Billy Campbell in the 2003 film The Stranger Beside Me, Michael Reilly Burke in the 2002 film Ted Bundy, and Mark Harmon in the 1986 filmThe Deliberate Stranger.

Ted Bundy: American Boogeyman will be shown in US theaters for one night only on August 16 and will stream on VOD starting September 3, 2021.
