Viva, San Sebastian in Lipa

By CHRISTINE DAYRIT, The Philippine STAR Published Jan 20, 2024 5:00 am

In the nearby progressive city of Lipa in Batangas is a land blessed by cool breezes and fertile lands, where vast fields of coffee plantations, centuries-old churches steeped in legend, and an impressive legacy exist. Their slogan "Eat Pray and Love Lipa" resonates loudly.

Amid the grandeur of their fiesta, I was privileged to witness an opulent musical recently—a very touching production about the life of Saint Sebastian, a martyr and valiant soldier for Christ.

The captivating, original musical, penned by Luisito Nario and scored by Fernando Silva, transports us to the past, showing the struggles of yesteryear and modern-day challenges. Through San Sebastián, we realize, as Lipa City Tourism president Joel Pena emphasizes, "Once visitors pay homage to San Sebastián, they fall in love and feel a special connection to him. His image tied to a tree enhances the bonding experience with each guest.”

“San Sebastián saved Lipa so many times during volcanic eruptions and other tragedies,” shared Elmer Pilones, who takes care of the centuries-old relic of San Sebastián. Lipa has witnessed miracles from the past till today. There are accounts of miraculous healings, like a delicate tumor in his stomach that vanished without a trace, attributed to the divine intervention of San Sebastián.

The amazing production titled "San Sebastián, Dulang Musika" serves as a testament to the enduring relevance of the city's past and a reflection of the trials faced today. Sebastian's life is portrayed from his early years to valorous battles fought for faith. Beaten to death by arrows and left for dead, St. Irene of Rome miraculously nursed him, strengthening his faith.

The attentive audience and the show's producer expressed tears of joy, gratitude, and love for their patron saint as the curtain fell. Lipa's fiesta proved more than a celebration; it was a profound advocacy to share the life of a martyr whose life mirrored his faith worthy of emulation.

We explored Lipa with my dear friends Caren and Mel Martinez, Willy Ong, and Vivian Merosa as we learned more about Lipa's proud history. Even our furry friends Felizia, Choco, and Cutie enjoyed their stroll around the plaza. The San Sebastián Cathedral was where Filipinos triumphed over Spanish forces in the late 18th century, showcasing Lipa's indomitable spirit and heritage.

Solano Hotel Lipa: Old world with new luxuries

After the musical, we indulged in the cozy complex Casa Isabela by Solano. This impressive place reminded me of Istanbul in Turkey. Casa Isabela by Solano, a boutique hotel, epitomizes luxury entwined with heritage. Nestled in Lipa's embrace, this splendid establishment pays homage to the city's rich history. Lovingly restored architectural details adorn its stately ambiance, offering an immersive experience. Each room provides modern amenities for a truly delightful stay. The hotel's fusion of timeless elegance and historical reverence is ready for those seeking refined comfort.

Timusan specials: Sinigang na maliputo, baked bangus, inihaw na panga, and crispy pancit (center)

We proceeded to Timusan Resto and enjoyed Filipino dishes like Sinigang na Maliputo, bangus with tomato and onions, inihaw na panga, crispy pata, and tasty pancit varieties. This charming restaurant boasts impeccable lighting, creating an inviting atmosphere that extends to an attractive courtyard adorned with a European fountain and lush plants.

Just a short distance from Timusan Resto is an authentic Taiwanese restaurant named Golden Tree. The tantalizing aroma of their chicken dishes, flavorful noodle soup, delectable dumplings, and more make the trip utterly worthwhile. Golden Tree promises a culinary journey that's truly out of this world. The restaurant, with its warm ambiance and diverse menu, is a sumptuous fusion of Taiwanese and Lipa's rich flavors. The aromatic chicken dishes and savory noodle soup are highlights, providing a delightful taste of Taiwanese gastronomy.

Another must-try is Pinkies Farm with farm-fresh products, showcasing Lipa's heritage and warmth. Their milk, yogurt, and cheese add flavor to Lipa's vibrant tapestry.

One ought to stay at the ultra-luxe Hotel 1925, owned by the enterprising Mojares sisters. Hotel 1925 is a luxurious retreat with Pinoy gastronomic offerings, plus an Italian restaurant boasting amazing pizza. The boutique hotel captivates with elegantly designed rooms. Each detail is curated to evoke a sense of grandeur, transporting guests to a bygone era.

Development and progress in Lipa are aplenty—from bustling shopping complexes to exquisite dining establishments, it weaves a tapestry of experiences. World-class resorts, notably the serene Farm in San Benito, beckon with tranquility. Top-notch golf courses like Malarayat and Summit attract many avid golfers. Amid this allure, renowned universities like De La Salle Lipa contribute to the city's educational foundation.

In the vibrant celebration of Lipa's 2024 fiesta, novena masses, agri fairs, gold tournaments, a photo contest, a vloggers contest, beauty contests, guided heritage tours, and gastronomic tours offer a dynamic and engaging experience. Mayor Eric B. Africa, championing culture and the arts; and Ruben Dimaculangan, head of the parish, resonate with constituents, creating a unique leadership style. The Lipa Tourism Council actively promotes arts and culture, contributing to a thriving tourism sector.

In the last fiesta, the Madrigal Singers, Philharmonic Orchestra, and Center of Culture and Arts in Region 4 serenaded the province. This blend of leadership, cultural promotion, and artistic expression underscores Lipa's dynamic community spirit.

As I look back on this precious celebration of the Lipa fiesta, I will never forget the experience of their culture, heritage, faith, and the wonderful people they are. Eat, pray, love Lipa.

Viva, San Sebastián in Lipa!
