Korean adaption of 'La casa de papel' in the works at Netflix
Netflix has just announced that a Korean adaptation of the widely-popular Spanish crime drama series La casa de papel is in the works.
Set on the Korean Peninsula, the streaming giant said that the upcoming project, popularly known as Money Heist, will be helmed by Kim Hong-sun. He previously directed several fantasy crime genre series including The Guest, Voice, and Black. Meanwhile, Ryu Yong-jae and his team, whose credits include the Netflix original series My Holo Love and tvN series Psychopath Diary, will be the screenwriters for the show.
Following the announcement, La casa de papel creator and executive producer Álex Pina expressed his excitement with the upcoming 12-episode series adaptation.
“Korean creators have been developing their own language and audiovisual culture for years. They have managed, like our series, to go beyond cultural borders and become a point of reference for thousands of viewers around the world, especially among young people," Pina said.
“That is why I find it fascinating that the world of La casa de papel is so attractive to Korean creators as to do an adaptation. The fact that the action is set on the Korean Peninsula also seems to me to be a milestone which I am really delighted about," he added.
The show’s fourth installment, which debuted on April 3, managed to rack up 65 million views during the first month of its worldwide release.
The cast of the final season of the Spanish crime drama includes Miguel Ángel Silvestre (Sense 8), Patrick Criado, Álvaro Morte (The Professor), Itziar Ituño (Lisbon), Úrsula Coberó (Tokyo), Pedro Alonso (Berlin), Miguel Herrán (Rio), Jaime Lorente (Denver), Esther Acebo (Stockholm), Darko Peric (Helsinki), Hovik Keuchkerian (Bogotá), Luka Peros (Marseille), Belén Cuesta (Manila), and Rodrigo de la Serna (Palermo).
The 10-part series finale is currently in production.
